They don't work for serious situations, but they are very useful when it comes to easing the sting from a burn, the pain from a wound, or the inconveniences of diarrhea.

They're natural products that you might have in your pantry, and they can act as an ally in first aid situations you or your children may have that don't require a visit to the doctor.

In her book Natural First Aid, Brigitte Mars offers a list of products that can be used to tend to "minor and domestic" health questions.

Baking soda. Just a small amount of this product, which comes in the form of salts, diluted in water forms a paste that can be used to sooth sunburns, insect bites, and mild dermatitis produced by contact with some plants.

Cider vinegar. A spoonful of this specific type of vinegar mixed with a glass of cold water fights against exhaustion resulting from high temperatures and exertion.  Vinegar replaces electrolytes and minerals lost during sweating.

Ginger. This is useful for adults to fight against stomach aches.  Chewing a piece of the root or consuming it as a supplement can prevent nausea.

Honey. Has a number of properties: mixing it with water promotes rehydration thus putting a stop to diarrhea, and mixing it with lemon helps remedy a sore throat due to the common cold.

Lavender oil. It's a great antiseptic for treating minor scratches and cuts because it takes away the pain caused by wounds.  It can be applied directly to the skin without having to be diluted.
